Family Papers, 1806-1967, (bulk 1859-1902).

Consists of letters, diaries, manuscripts, a family Bible, photographs, genealogy files, and notebooks. The letters in this collection, between Irvine, his wife, and their children, provide accounts of military camp life, battles during the Civil War and with Indians in Dakota, the fears Margaret experienced when her husband was transferred to battle areas, the loneliness of long separations, attitudes toward social activities and events, and daily household activities.

Army officer. Capt. Irvine served with the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry and the 13th U.S. Infantry during the Civil War before serving periodically at Fort Rice, Fort Thompson, and Fort Sully in Dakota Territory with the 22nd U.S. Infantry from 1866 to 1873. His wife, Margaret Louisa Halsted Irvine, and their three children joined him at Fort Sully in 1867. In 1878 Irvine's daughter, M. Louisa, returned to Dakota as a missionary to the Lakota from Cheyenne River Agen...
